Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
