Qatar Short Race and Main Event Qualifying: Real-Time Coverage

Opening Notes

Our correspondent is arriving soon to take you through this day's sprint race (14:00 GMT) and qualifying (18:00 GMT).

Current Events

Starting Lap Time

The warm-up lap has started.

Track Information

We have nineteen laps around the lengthiest track in Formula One, David Croft points out.

Final Moments

The final countdown has begun.

Driver Situation

One point in Verstappen's favour: his fellow driver Yuki Tsunoda is ahead of him by a single position. He is unlikely to mess with the team's lead driver.

Media Conversations

Sky's internal discussion currently: Gary Neville is at the Mercedes team.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to 2026, speaking with the engineer about his promotion to Aston Martin lead role.

Grid Details

There are only 16 cars on the grid. This followed another poor grid-setting session for the driver: after coming 20th and last in Las Vegas, leading to an eighth-place finish in the main race, he failed to make it out of the first qualifying segment once more on the previous day. The team have consequently made changes to his setup and so he begins from the pit lane.

The team's Lance Stroll and the Alpine duo of Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Racer Statements

"We take the learning for tomorrow," says Isack Hadjar, starting eleventh. Expect a lot of that.

Team Standings

It's not all about the individual championship: The team have dominated the constructors' gong but Mercedes, with a 40-point lead over their rivals, will be hoping to secure the runner-up position this weekend. George Russell can help them achieve that from the front row, and Kimi Antonelli will start just behind Verstappen.

Previous Results

Piastri was victorious then – as he managed last year, as well. The driver from McLaren is going for a third consecutive win.

Short Race Importance

Alright, approximately twenty minutes remaining until the short race gets under way. Barring disaster, it's greatest value is as an indication of future events, instead of significant in its itself, with only eight points awarded to the winner. However, second place in this race was enough for Verstappen to claim the title two years ago.

The driver claimed F1 world title following his teammate's accident of Qatar GP sprint race.
