The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Follows Mixed Feedback
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a clearer game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete text from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.
The belief in this project increases every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s management and experience in the PVP shooter field is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
The President
Background of the Incoming Head
The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Face the competition with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but players can anticipate additional details as creation continues.
