The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
