Toy Story 5 Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and bringing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed recently, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang
The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her outfit.
Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
