Authorities stated they were contacted by a individual who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then found multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Officials say early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.

An important political figure stated the vandalism made him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
